Past Events

This page details past events that have been hosted by Fort Defiance. Many events are recurring and are centered around sharing the grounds for our neighbors and visitors to enjoy and learn from.

Many of these events are recurring so keep an eye on our "Upcoming Events" page, or our Facebook and Instagram!

Lenoir's Rangers

Lenoir's Rangers are named for the militia regiment that William Lenoir trained and regulated when he lived in Wilkes County, prior to his plantation home being built in 1788. The Lenoir's Rangers of today are a reenactment group that work with Fort Defiance.

Throughout the year (check our upcoming events page) the Lenoir's Rangers run musket drills and camp onsite, educating visitors on how Lenoir's Rangers of the 18th Century  lived and trained.

Lunch and Learn Program

Fort Defiance regularly schedules "Lunch & Learns." These are free on-site events where the general public is invited to bring their lunch and a chair and gather at the picnic shelter to learn about Caldwell County and the Happy Valley region's history, including the people, events, and traditions that shaped it.

Lectures are led by guest speakers who are experts in their fields.

Field Trips for Schools and Homeschool Co-Ops

Fort Defiance offers field trips that align with North Carolina state standards and allows students to explore local and state history on site. Students learn about the Overmountain Victory Trail, as well as what life was like among free and enslaved individuals in the region from the 18th and 19th centuries.
